Whisky decanter guide: what they do, and what they do not

A whisky decanter is for presentation and serving, not storage or improvement. Unlike wine, spirits do not develop in glass — once bottled, whisky is finished. A decanter will hold whisky well for a few months if the stopper seals properly, but a poor seal lets alcohol evaporate and dulls the spirit.
Decanting whisky does not improve it
Wine decanting has a purpose: it separates the wine from its sediment and exposes it to air, which changes how it tastes. Neither applies to whisky. Spirits are filtered before bottling and stop developing the moment they leave the cask. Whisky in a decanter tastes the same as whisky in the bottle.
That is not an argument against decanters. It is an argument for buying one because it looks good on the shelf, which is the honest reason most people want one.
How long whisky keeps in a decanter
The limiting factor is the seal. A well-fitted stopper will keep whisky in good condition for several months. A loose one lets alcohol evaporate steadily, and as the spirit weakens the flavour flattens with it. The more air sits above the whisky, the faster this happens, so a half-empty decanter degrades faster than a full one.
For anything you are keeping longer than a few months, or anything genuinely rare, leave it in the bottle.
The lead crystal question
Traditional lead crystal contains lead oxide, and long-term storage of spirits in it is generally advised against because lead can migrate into the liquid over time. Short-term serving is a different matter from months of storage, but the simplest way to avoid the question altogether is to choose lead-free glass.
Modern decanters are widely available in lead-free crystal glass, which gives the same clarity and weight without the concern. If you are buying new, there is little reason to choose otherwise.
Cleaning without leaving marks
Rinse with warm water and let it drain fully. Avoid washing-up liquid where you can — residue is difficult to rinse out of a narrow neck and taints the next pour. For stubborn residue, uncooked rice with a little warm water, swirled gently, scours the inside without scratching it.
Dry upside down at an angle so air circulates. Water left in the base is what causes cloudy marks, and once they set into the glass they are very hard to shift.
